Private Piano Lessons (ages 5 and up)
I offer private piano lessons for children and teens for beginners and transfer students in my home studio located Calgary, Alberta in the community of Citadel.
Lesson Length and Format
Lessons are given on a weekly basis typically from September to June, however, I do accept registrations year around. The starting lesson length is 40 minutes, giving us enough time to review materials and introduce something new. Younger students will spend time doing on and off the bench activities to help keep the wiggles out!
A well tuned acoustic piano or a fully weighted digital piano with 88 keys and a pedal is required for lessons. If you do not have a piano yet, please contact me and I can help point you in the right direction!
Lesson Prices
Pricing for lessons is $165.00/month for a 40 minute weekly lesson. This fee also includes 3 group workshops and 2 recitals. There is a one time registration payment of $40 per student to hold your spot in the calendar and covers the cost of supplies. Cost of books are extra.
Lesson Components
We explore everything from reading music and rhythm, rote pieces, technique, improvisation, movement, listening, games, and theory. Explore the different components of lessons below.
Reading music and rhythm
This is one of the most fundamental skills in piano. And is made up several other skills like interval reading, rhythm reading, and identifying notes on the staff. Music is truly its own language!
Rote pieces
Simply put, rote pieces is the student copying what the teacher is playing. These pieces allow students be able to play something that is beyond their current reading ability. What they learn from these pieces is patterns in music, musical expressions, and developing their technique.
Technique
This is another fundamental part of piano. When young students first begin they learn different Animal Techniques, like Lion Paw and Tall Giraffe. These simple exercises allow students to learn about the basic technic like arm weight or legato playing in a fun way!
Improvisation
Improvisation is creating a melody on the spot. Students are given a simple set of instructions, such as play on the black keys or on white keys, while I play a complementary part theirs. This allows students to explore and discover what sounds good to them. There are no wrong notes during improvisation!
Listening to music
This is a great way for students to feel inspired! We listen to a wide variety of recordings from piano music to full orchestras in lessons. Listening can also let us explore different concepts, such as feeling the beat and tempo. I also encourage students to see live performances.
Theory and games
Using games is a fun way for students to reinforce concepts they have learnt or begin exploring a new concept or skill. This allows students to see something new away from the piano before seeing it in their music, this can less intimidating for students.
Written theory work is also incorporated, when age appropriate, into lessons which can lead to a better understand of the music.
